The strife was not personal for Abram and Lot, but it was a point of conflict between their servants.ĨAbram said to Lot, “Let there be no quarreling between me and you, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen, for we are close relatives. (Now the Canaanites and the Perizzites were living in the land at that time.) Abram and Lot were so blessed with livestock by the Abrahamic Covenant, that the neutral land of Bethel could not support both of them.ħSo there were quarrels between Abram’s herdsmen and Lot’s herdsmen. Abram and Lot could only graze in the neutral land, which was usually more barren. Much of the grazing land was controlled by the Canaanite city states. Because their possessions were so great, they were not able to live alongside one another. Since Lot had extra tents, he possessed servants as well.ĦBut the land could not support them while they were living side by side. Lot was blessed by the Abrahamic Covenant because of his relationship to Abram. Bethel means “house of God”.ĤThis was the place where he had first built the altar, and there Abram worshiped the Lord.Ībram began and resumed public worship at Bethel.ĥNow Lot, who was traveling with Abram, also had flocks, herds, and tents. He returned to the place where he had pitched his tent at the beginning, between Bethel and Ai.Ībram traveled back to Bethel, which was the central hill country of Israel. Lot also traveled with Abram to Egypt.Ģ(Now Abram was very wealthy in livestock, silver, and gold.)Ībram left Ur, so he was blessed materially by the Abrahamic Covenant.ģAnd he journeyed from place to place from the Negev as far as Bethel. He took his wife and all his possessions with him, as well as Lot.Ībram returned to the Negev, which is the southern part of Israel from which he came. 1So Abram went up from Egypt into the Negev.
